Moscow, 17 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - Russia's Atomic Energy Ministry reports that a technician at a nuclear research institute near Nizhny Novgorod suffered a high dose of radiation today.
A ministry statement says the incident occured at the nuclear research institute in the town of Arzamas-16. Arzamas-16 is the code name for the small town of Sarov, once a top secret center for producing nuclear weapons. The ministry said there had been a "serious violation of operational rules" which caused a leak of neutron radiation.
Radiation levels outside the plant were reported normal.
