MOSCOW -- Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov has filed a lawsuit against the head of a human rights center who accused him of involvement in the murder of Chechen rights activist Natalya Estemirova, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Oleg Orlov, the head of Memorial, told journalists at a press conference in Moscow on July 16 that Kadyrov is personally responsible for Estemirova's death.
Kadyrov has accused Orlov of "insulting his honor and dignity."
Kadyrov is demanding a public apology from Orlov and the equivalent of $316,000 as compensation for moral damage.
Orlov told RFE/RL that he is ready to respond with details of Kadyrov's threats against Estemirova. He also said he never thought about any of the consequences of his statements, but the most important thing for him is to find the people who ordered and carried out Estemirova's killing.
Moscow's Tverskoi Court has begun an investigation.
