TBILISI -- Georgian Reintegration Minister Temur Iakobashvili said today Tbilisi is ready to cooperate with Russia to identify terrorists in connection with the Moscow subway bombings.
Iakobashvili was responding to an earlier statement by Russian Security Council Director Nikolai Patrushev, who told the Russian daily "Kommersant" today that Georgian involvement in the March 29 subway bombings "cannot be excluded."
Iakobashvili invited Moscow to make available any evidence that would substantiate Patrushev's statement. He made his comments in an interview with the Georgian television channel Rustavi-2.
Iakobashvili said Georgia does not want "new problems similar to Pankisi," the region close to the Georgian-Chechen border that Russian officials claimed was used previously by Chechen fighters as a base.
David Jalagonia, who is an assistant to Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze, said the international community does not take seriously Russian claims that Georgia cooperates with terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda.
