CHISINAU -- Moldovan Deputy Economy Minister Tudor Copaci says the weeklong suspension of Russian natural gas shipments via Ukraine has shown that Moldova must build its own gas reserves and look for alternative sources of energy.
Moldova -- which is 100 percent dependent on Russian gas -- has not received any since January 7.
Copcaci told RFE/RL's Moldovan Service that his country will seek to get connected to the Nabucco pipeline, a European Union project that would bring Caspian and Central Asian gas to Europe via the Black Sea and Romania, bypassing Russia and Ukraine.
Copaci said Moldova expects to receive Russian gas shipments by January 15.
Moldova's national gas monopoly, Moldovagaz, said it expects the Russian gas to arrive as early as the evening of January 14.
