Monster Azerbaijani Flag Is No More...For Now

We blogged yesterday about the unfurling of a huge new flag in Azerbaijan, which sits atop the world's tallest unsupported flagpole.

Well, it did. The flag was damaged by the wind and had to be taken down, which is perhaps no surprise given that some etymologists believe Baku's name originates from the Persian for "wind-pounded city."

The picture was taken by one of RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service correspondents this morning.

About This Blog

Written by RFE/RL editors and correspondents, Transmission serves up news, comment, and the odd silly dictator story. While our primary concern is with foreign policy, Transmission is also a place for the ideas -- some serious, some irreverent -- that bubble up from our bureaus. The name recognizes RFE/RL's role as a surrogate broadcaster to places without free media. You can write us at transmission+rferl.org
