Sacked University Rector Sues Russian Security Service

KIROV, Russia -- The former rector of a university in Russia's Kirov Oblast has filed a lawsuit against the Federal Security Service (FSB), RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Yevgeny Pimenov, a medical doctor who has been awarded a Russian state award, was sacked from his post in October after the FSB accused him of revealing state secrets.

Pimenov is demanding 1 million rubles ($34,000) from the FSB for moral damages caused by the comments and the loss of his job.

Pimenov told RFE/RL on March 22 that the FSB chief in the northeastern region of Kirov called him a "dishonest man" while he was being investigated. He said such statements were also placed on the Internet.

"My friends and relatives were shocked and stressed [by the comments about me]," Pimenov said.

Kirov's Pervomai district court will begin hearing the case on April 6.
