The sister of a jailed Iranian journalist and human rights activist has been sentenced to 18 months in prison, RFE/RL's Radio Farda reports.
Parvin Tajik was sentenced by Judge Mohammad Moghiseh in Tehran's revolutionary court no. 28 on November 16 for "disseminating propaganda against the Islamic republic regime" and "agitating public opinion."
Tajik had been previously summoned to Tehran’s Evin prison in September to be notified of the charges against her. She was later released on bail.
Tajik's brother, Abdolreza Tajik, is a member of the Tehran-based Defenders of Human Rights Center. He was arrested on June 12 for the third time since Iran's controversial presidential election in June 2009.
In an open letter to the Iranian Judiciary in late July, Tajik's family wrote that their son, Abdolreza, had been "dishonored" in jail.
Parvin Tajik told Radio Farda at the time that during a prison visit, her brother had informed her of his being "dishonored" in the presence of a deputy prosecutor on the first night of his arrest.
Abdolreza Tajik's lawyer, Mohammad Sharif, told Radio Farda then that "being dishonored" in Iranian judicial cases is interpreted as "being sexually or physically assaulted."
Since her brother's arrest, Parvin Tajik has repeatedly given interviews to the media about prison conditions.
