Ten Arrested In Protest On Moscow Highway

MOSCOW -- Ten people were arrested today when police broke up a protest on the main Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod highway to demand that their purchased apartments be finished, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

About 100 protesters parked 20 cars with their hazard lights flashing along the highway and blocking traffic in some places, nakanune.ru reported.

The protesters are from a group of more than 500 families who have waited more than eight years for apartments from a housing project they invested in.

The demonstrators told RFE/RL that the construction company Community has continually lagged behind construction schedules and has demanded additional money from the investors.

The unhappy investors have asked for President Dmitry Medvedev to help resolve the dispute.

They also want the Noginskovo regional government to be held responsible for the problem as it approved of the housing development but have not enforced any of the construction timetables.
