CHISINAU -- Moldovan writer Savatie Bastavoi was detained on June 30 for several hours in Moldova's breakaway Transdniester region after local police searched his car and found "films and photographs," RFE/RL's Moldovan Service reports.
Bastavoi, who is also a priest, was on his way to a monastery in Chitcani, which is in Transdniester. Two men traveling with him, described by the media as a Moldovan photographer and a Romanian citizen, were also arrested. They were later released.
Human right activists in Moldova say such incidents have become more frequent lately.
The head of Moldova's Central Election Commission, Eugen Stirbu, was detained briefly in Transdniester earlier this month on his way back from Poland, where he had been an observer in the Polish presidential election.
