Six Wounded In Shoot-Out In Armenia's Second-Largest City

Police in the Armenian city of Gyumri were searching for those involved in a gunbattle in the center of the city that left at least six people wounded over the weekend.

The shoot-out started around midnight on March 7 and reportedly followed an argument between two groups, though police have not identified the cause of the dispute.

Raffi Aslanian, the chief prosecutor in the Shirak Province, where Gyumri is located, said spent cartridges and clubs were found at the scene, and several vehicles parked there were believed to belong to some of the suspects.

Aslanian said on March 9 that no arrests have been made in the case.

Four of the people wounded were still in the hospital, two with gunshot wounds and two with stabbing wounds.

Armenian media have linked the gunbattle to recent killings in Yerevan that were connected to criminal groups and speculated there was a gang war under way.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
