Armenian Officials To Probe Russian Soldier Accused Of Murdering Family

The case of a Russian soldier accused of killing seven members of an Armenian family has been handed over to investigators in Armenia.

Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian made the announcement in Yerevan on June 26 after talks with visiting Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov, who is also chairman of the Armenian-Russian intergovernmental commission.

Valery Permyakov, who served in the Russian military base stationed in Gyumri, was apprehended by Russian border-guards soon after allegedly massacring seven members of the Avetisian family in an early morning shooting rampage on January 12.

Russia refused to hand him over to Armenian investigators despite protests held in Gyumri in mid-January.
