Armenia Commemorates 1999 Parliament Killings


Deputies scatter as gunmen enter Armenia's parliament on October 27, 1999 (ITAR-TASS) October 27, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Armenia is mourning today, the seventh anniversary of a shooting at the parliament that left eight people, including the prime minister and the parliament speaker, dead, RFE/RL's Armenian Service reported.


The gunmen killed Armenian Prime Minister Vazgen Sarkissian, parliament speaker Karen Demirchan, and six ministers and deputies.


The five gunmen, who burst into the parliament chamber during a government question-and-answer period, said they wanted to punish corrupt officials.
