Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman is in Baku for a two-day visit to discuss Israeli-Azeri cooperation.

Lieberman’s trip comes one month after an article in the U.S. magazine "Foreign Policy" said Israel had gained access to Azerbaijani airfields in connection with possible military action in neighboring Iran targeting the Iranian nuclear program.

Both Azerbaijan and Israel denied the report.

Israel and its ally the United States say they fear the Iranian nuclear progam could be directed toward making a nuclear weapon that could threaten Israel's existence.

Iran denies any military component to its nuclear program.

Ties between Azerbaijan and the Islamic republic were also strained recently over reports that Israel had reached a $1.6 billion deal to supply weapons to Azerbaijan.

Based on reporting by "The Jerusalem Post" and RFE/RL’s Azerbaijani Service

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
