IS Group Claims Baghdad Hotel Bombings

The Islamic State (IS) extremist group has claimed responsibility for car bomb attacks outside two upscale Baghdad hotels.

Iraqi officials said two separate car bombs hit the Ishtar and Babylon hotels in central Baghdad late on May 28, killing at least 10 people and wounded dozens.

The Babylon Hotel, a swanky and recently refurbished hotel overlooking the Tigris River, faces the U.S. Embassy and Baghdad's fortified Green Zone.

Police said security forces found another car bomb in the Babylon's car park and defused it.

IS militants, who captured swathes of territory north and west of Baghdad in June 2014, have frequently attacked the Iraqi capital, with bombings on the rise in recent weeks.

In 2010, the hotels were the target of coordinated car bombs that killed more than 30 people.
