WATCH: Pakistani Bus Attack Kills Civil Service Commuters In Peshawar

At least 15 people were killed and more than two dozen wounded when a bomb blew up inside a bus in Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan, officials said on March 16.

The explosion took place in Saddar, a busy shopping district, as the bus was picking up government workers to take them to their offices.

Pakistani police officer Abbas Majeed Marwat told RFE/RL’s Radio Mashaal that an improvised explosive device was planted under a seat in the bus and detonated remotely.

Local officials told Radio Mashaal that the bus was transporting government employees from the northwestern town of Mardan to Peshawar.

Ghulam Subhani, administrator at Lady Reading Hospital, said 26 people had been admitted at the hospital, some in critical condition.

Lashkar-e-Islam, a militant group allied with the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was to avenge a military court's sentencing of 13 militants to death on March 15.

Based on reporting by Reuters and AP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
