Brothers Detained After Crossing Uzbek-Kazakh Border

Kazakh border guards have detained two brothers they say tried to enter the country illegally from Uzbekistan.

The Border Guard Service said on April 2 that the brothers -- one a Kazakh citizen and the other an Uzbek citizen -- had prior convictions in Uzbekistan for theft and illegal weapons possession.

The men, aged 30 and 35, were detained in South Kazakhstan province on April 1.

The service said one of the brothers was armed with a knife and attacked a border guard while resisting arrest.

Both now face charges of illegal border crossing and armed resistance to the authorities.

Many ethnic Uzbeks live on the Kazakh side of the border with Uzbekistan and vice versa.

Based on reporting by KazTAG and newskaz.ru
