The U.S. broadcasting network CBS says correspondent Lara Logan was beaten and sexually assaulted by a mob on Tahrir Square in Cairo while covering celebrations at the news former President Hosni Mubarak was stepping down.
CBS says Logan and her crew were covering the event for the "60 Minutes" program when they were surrounded by "a mob of more than 200 people whipped into a frenzy."
Logan was separated from the rest of the crew as they attempted to retreat from the area.
"She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers," CBS said.
Logan flew back to the United States the next day. She is recovering in a hospital.
