A Russian court has convicted a top Islamic rebel commander on terrorism charges and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Ali Taziyev, an ethnic Ingush also known as "Magas," is a top lieutenant to Doku Umarov, the leader of the Islamic insurgency in Russia's North Caucasus.
He was arrested in 2010 in Russia's Republic of Ingushetia.
On October 15, the court in the southern Russian city of Rostov-na-Donu found him guilty of involvement in a spate of high-profile militant attacks, including masterminding and organizing the attempted assassination in 2009 of Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, the leader of Ingushetia.
Umarov proclaimed an independent Islamic state -- Imarat Kavkaz (Caucasus Emirate) -- in the North Caucasus in 2007.
Umarov appointed Taziyev as his top military commander.
