Daghestan Official Loses Job Over Militant Son

The deputy mayor of the city of Khasavyurt in Russia's restive North Caucasus republic of Daghestan was sacked from his post after his son was arrested along with several armed militants earlier this week.

Daghestan's presidential office said on August 10 that Salimkhan Dzhamaldinov was fired as "people who failed to bring up their own children as law-abiding citizens" cannot work at state bodies.

Officials had said Dzhamaldinov's son, Iskhak, was arrested along with several armed militants on the outskirts of Khasavyurt on August 7.

Officials said the arrested men were members of a terrorist group active in the city.

Violence between suspected Islamic militants and security forces in Russia's North Caucasus region, which includes Daghestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, and Kabardino-Balkaria, leaves scores of people dead and injured each year.

Based on reporting by Interfax and izvestia.ru

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
