The White House says Iraq has denied signing any contracts to receive arms from Iran.
Spokesman Jay Carney said on February 25 that American officials had raised concerns about the reported deal "at the highest levels" of the Iraqi government but that the Iraqi Defense Department denied any arms deal with Iran.
The Iranian government also denied any knowledge of an arms deal.
However, the chairman of the Iraqi parliament's Security and Defense Committee, Hassan al-Sinaid, told RFE/RL's Radio Free Iraq on February 25 that Baghdad is "buying light arms and ammunition" from Iran.
The United States has said any sale or transfer of arms from Iran would be in violation of UN resolutions targeting the Persian Gulf state.
On February 24, the Reuters news agency reported that Iran and Iraq had signed a deal to provide Baghdad with arms and ammunition worth $195 million.
