The head of Russia's presidential office says he knew for years about alleged embezzlement of state funds at a company developing Russia's satellite navigation system.
In comments broadcast late on November 11, Sergei Ivanov said he discussed the theft with police but didn't speak publicly about it to prevent the culprits from covering up their actions.
Ivanov's comments come after the Interior Ministry announced its investigation into the allegations of embezzlement of 6.5 billion rubles ($200 million) allocated for Russia's Glonass satellite navigation system.
When Ivanov was deputy prime minister, he oversaw the development of the system that competes with the GPS navigation system built by the United States.
The allegations follow another corruption scandal that led to last week's ouster of Russia's defense minister.
