Kyiv Says Five Soldiers Killed In Eastern Ukraine

Kyiv says five government soldiers have been killed in clashes with pro-Russian separatists in the country's east over the past 24 hours.

Army spokesman Andriy Lysenko said on November 14 that four other soldiers were injured in the fighting, the deadliest violence since a September truce was established.

The troops were killed in clashes with pro-Russian rebels to the north and west of the separatist stronghold of Donetsk.

The violence comes after fighting had significantly abated since the two sides agreed to a renewed cease-fire two months ago that has largely held.

Under the cease-fire deal, both sides are meant to have withdrawn most weapons from the frontline as part of a 12-point peace plan designed to end the conflict.

Based on reporting by Reuters and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
