Kyrgyz Officials Seek Security Guards In Armored Car Heist

BISHKEK -- The Kyrgyz Interior Ministry says an armed robbery on a armored car in Bishkek was carried out by two security guards, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Interior Ministry officials say the two security officers -- whose whereabouts are unknown -- stole 10 million soms ($225,300) in cash from the armored car at around 11:45 a.m on August 10.

One of the guards was identified as Ulan Yusupov, 29 years old.

Officials said the security guards shot the driver of the armored car in the leg when he refused to drive to a certain destination. The car eventually stopped on Frunze Street and the security guards made off with the cash on foot. The wounded driver has been hospitalized.

The Bishkek Prosecutor-General's Office has launched an investigation into the incident.

The two security guards are employed by a private security agency. The stolen money belonged to the post office.
