BISHKEK -- Some 200 people blocked a highway today in a northern part of the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, to demand infrastructure and their registration as residents, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
The protesters, who live in a settlement known as Ak-Jar, said on August 8 that they want to have a meeting with Prime Minister Almazbek Atambaev to discuss their demands.
The protesters have been living for several years in homes that they built without obtaining official permission on land that they do not own.
They are not officially registered as living in Bishkek, and their settlement has no electricity, running water, or sewerage.
The protesters say that because they are not official residents, their children cannot attend nearby schools.
They pledged not to leave the highway until the government takes action to resolve their problems.
