OSH, Kyrgyzstan -- Kyrgyz security forces have found an illegal arms workshop during a special operation in the village of Kara-Suu, near the southern town of Osh, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Police say the owner of the workshop and his employees were modifying air rifles so they could be used as assault rifles. They discovered the workshop on January 23.
Osh Oblast Interior Affairs Department head Pamir Asanov told RFE/RL that two suspects were detained and a large quantity of guns and ammunition confiscated from the workshop.
Authorities have begun an investigation.
Ethnic clashes in June between Uzbeks and Kyrgyz in the southern regions of Jalal-Abad and Osh left at least 426 people dead and thousands homeless.
