Libyan Forces Claim Control Of IS Headquarters In Sirte

U.S.-backed Libyan militias say they have captured the Islamic State (IS) group's headquarters in their main Libyan stronghold of Sirte.

A spokesman for forces loyal to Libya's UN-backed government of national accord, Rida Issa, said on August 10 that the forces also took Sirte's Ibn Sina hospital and university campus.

However, IS fighters still held positions in residential areas of Sirte and in a villa complex near the seafront.

Earlier in the day, Libyan forces said they had lost a fighter jet over Sirte.

Issa said the cause of the crash and the fate of the crew could not be confirmed.

A news agency affiliated with the IS group said it shot down the jet, killing a pilot.

The city has been under IS control since February 2015.
