Moldova’s Prime Minister Iurie Leanca is visiting Paris on June 16 as Chisinau continues to forge closer ties with Europe, despite moves by Moscow to try to keep the country tied closer to Russia's sphere of influence.

Meanwhile, Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration is beginning consultations with civic groups in Chisinau about the country’s plans to sign a European Union Association Agreement later this month.

Moldova and Georgia both plan to sign the EU treaty on closer trade and political ties on June 27 in Brussels.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has sought to ease Moscow's concerns about the EU accord, saying during a recent visit to Chisinau that it does not pose a threat to Russia.
