Nagorno-Karabakh Says Fighter Killed By Azerbaijani Fire

Armenia-backed separatists say one of their fighters has been killed by gunfire by Azerbaijani forces in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Dozens died in clashes between Azerbaijani forces and Armenia-backed separatists over the breakaway region earlier this month in some of the worst fighting in decades.

A Moscow-brokered cease-fire has largely held since taking effect on April 5, but sporadic shooting still breaks out.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a mainly ethnic Armenian region inside Azerbaijan. Separatists there fought a war in the early 1990s to establish de facto control over the territory. Some 30,000 people died in the fighting.

Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev on April 13 visited Istanbul, where he discussed the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a key supporter of Baku.

Based on reporting by Reuters and Interfax
