MOSCOW -- RFE/RL's Russian Service reports that eight opposition activists were detained after they unfurled banners on Moscow's Red Square that read "The enemy has taken over my country" and "Resist!"
According to the OVD-info human rights website, the Red Square demonstration on November 17 was intended as a rally "in defense of political prisoners."
OVD-info said six activists had been detained.
The Russian Interfax news agency reported only five opposition activists had been detained "for an attempted breach of peace."
None of the reports mentioned who organized the protest action on Red Square.
