Pakistani, Indian Troops In Rescue Effort After Deadly Kashmir Floods

Indian and Pakistani troops are working to rescue thousands of desperate residents amid floodwaters that have killed at least 320 people and left tens of thousands homeless in and around the disputed Kashmir region.

Residents were waving for help from rooftops in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir, where six days of rain have caused the worst flooding in some 50 years.

A Pakistani official said some 500 villages in Pakistan had been severely flooded and cars and livestock washed away by the high waters.

The prime ministers of India and Pakistan offered to help each other amid the emergency relief efforts and each overflew their parts of Kashmir to view the damage.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars over Kashmir and shoot-outs between the country's armies along the "line of control" are frequent.

Based on reporting by Reuters, AFP, and AP
