Violence Continues In Mideast As Kerry Meets Palestinian President

The Israeli military said a suspected Palestinian attacker was shot dead at a crossing between Israel and the West Bank on October 24.

It said the suspect tried to stab security personnel at the spot and they opened fire on the assailant.

It came as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in a bid to halt a wave of violence that many fear heralds a third Palestinian uprising.

Both Kerry and Abbas expressed hope that a solution could be found in brief comments to reporters as they began their meeting.

The meeting took place in Jordan, where Kerry was also due to hold talks with Jordan's King Abdullah.

He met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Berlin on October 23.

Kerry has said he would like to see clarity in the rules governing access to the Jerusalem holy site at the center of the tensions.

Over the past several weeks, 10 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks, mostly stabbings, while 49 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire. Israel said 28 of these were attackers while the rest were killed in clashes.
