BISHKEK -- The parents of some 40 Kyrgyz children infected with HIV through tainted blood transfusions are planning a mass protest, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Altynai Galieva, chairwoman of the nongovernmental organization Life Plus, told RFE/RL on September 12 that the parents will protest the fact that the medical personnel responsible for the transfusions have not been sacked.
They will also demand financial and social compensation from the government. She did not say when and where the protest will be held.
More than 40 children at the Nookat district clinic in Kyrgyzstan's southern region of Osh were diagnosed as being HIV positive in 2007.
It was later proved that they contracted the virus through transfusions of HIV-contaminated blood.
