Putin, Rohani Discuss Nuclear, Security Cooperation

The Kremlin says the presidents of Russia and Iran have discussed military and nuclear cooperation, as well as the fight against the Islamic State group.

Vladimir Putin and Hassan Rohani met on July 9 in the Russian city Ufa, which is hosting a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in which Iran has observer status.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin noted "positive dynamics" in the ongoing Vienna talks on Iran's nuclear program, and “expressed hope that the necessary compromise will be found in the near future.”

Rohani said he was grateful to Russia for its efforts to secure a comprehensive agreement between Iran and six world powers.

Peskov declined to say whether the talks touched on the delivery of the advanced S-300 missile-defense system to Iran.

In June, Russian state arms producer Almaz-Antei said it would supply Iran with the system once a commercial agreement is reached.
