Rally In Support Of Scotland's Independence In Abkhazia

Dozens of people have gathered in the capital of Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia region to express support for Scotland’s independence.

Scotland held a referendum on September 18 to decide whether it should become an independent country or stay in the United Kingdom.

As Scots voted, some 100 members of Abkhaz youth organizations rallied in Sukhumi’s Freedom Square to express solidarity with the Scottish nation.

Parlicipants held flags of Abkhazia and Scotland.

Activist Alkhas Adzhindzhal told reporters that Abkhaz youth organizations intended to send a delegation of observers to Scotland but they were denied visas by the United Kingdom.

Abkhazia, a Black Sea region with a population of about 200,000, shed Georgian government control in a 1992-93 war.

Russia recognized Abkhazia and another breakaway region, South Ossetia, as independent nations following a 2008 war with Georgia, but few governments have followed suit.

Based on reporting by Interfax and ITAR-TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
