Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry says two airmen were killed when their light aircraft crashed just outside of Moscow.
The crash occurred June 9 within the Moscow Oblast just to the northwest of the city.
ITAR-TASS quotes an unnamed police official who said the pilot was a retired officer from Russia's famed Strizhi aerobatics team -- 43-year-old retired Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Vasilyev.
It says the other person killed in the crash was a 48-year-old helicopter pilot named Valery Bugayev.
Russian aviation officials say the plane hit a gust of wind as it was gaining height, was thrown into a spin, and came crashing down.
