France's Le Pen Meets Duma Speaker In Moscow

The leader of France's National Front has visited Moscow for talks with the speaker of the lower house of parliament.

After meeting Sergei Naryshkin on May 26, Marine Le Pen said, "It is important that the representative of the leading party of France, which is what I am, should be able to discuss the situation in Europe, in the world.”

She said the discussion touched upon the Ukrainian crisis, the Islamic State extremist group, and other matters.

Le Pen, who has criticized the West's policy toward Russia over the conflict in Ukraine, is seen a major contender in France's 2017 presidential election.

In November 2014, her anti-immigrant, euro-sceptic party came under fire for taking out a 9 million euro ($9.8 million) loan with a Russian-owned bank.

Based on reporting by AFP, Reuters, and TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
