Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has expressed hope that Brussels will avoid "negative scenarios" over Greece.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Lavrov spoke by telephone to his Greek counterpart, Nikos Kotzias, on June 29.
The ministry said Lavrov “expressed his understanding of the actions by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's government” and the hope that “Greece will be able to overcome the current problems."
Debt talks between Greece and its international creditors have been broken as Athens is due to pay back $1.7 billion to the International Monetary Fund on June 30.
There are fears of a Greek default and a possible exit from the eurozone.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry also said Lavrov and Kotzias reaffirmed their countries' interest in extending the planned Turkish Stream gas pipeline to Europe through Greek territory.
