Russia's accession to the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has been finalized at a ceremony at the organization's Paris headquarters.
As of January 1, 2013, Russia will become the 31st NEA member.
The NEA is an agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) that promotes the safe, environmentally responsible, and economical development of nuclear energy.
Russian First Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Denisov said joining the NEA was "an important step" toward Russia's full OECD membership.
The U.S. State Department welcomed Russia's accession to the NEA, saying Washington "looks forward to working with Russia...for the mutual benefit of all members."
