Tens of thousands of people are attending a pro-Kremlin march in central Moscow to mark National Unity Day.

The organizers opened the November 4 rally with a minute of silence for the victims of a Russian jet crash in Egypt.

Celebrations were scrapped in St. Petersburg as Russia's second-largest city mourns the victims of the crash.

Metrojet's Airbus A321-200 went down over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on October 31 after taking off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh en route to St. Petersburg.

All 224 people on board, most of them Russians, were killed.

Unity Day is a national holiday created by President Vladimir Putin to celebrate a Russian victory over Polish forces in 1612.

Based on reporting by AP and TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
