At least one person was killed by an intentionally triggered snow slide in the Russian town of Kirovsk in Murmansk Oblast.
Officials said the avalanche above the Arctic Circle late on the evening of February 18 also damaged buildings, trees, and cars.
Russia's RIA-Novosti news agency reported that the victim was an employee of the local branch of the Emergency Situations Ministry who was a member of the team that triggered the avalanche.
Local media said the town had no warning that the avalanche would be triggered.
Officials routinely use explosives to trigger avalanches in order to prevent snow from accumulating and causing larger snow slides.
