Russian President Vladimir Putin says Moscow and Washington have a "common understanding" on what needs to be done to resolve the crisis in Syria.
Putin spoke to reporters in Indonesia after meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at the end of the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) trade summit.
Putin praised the U.S. position and said he believed experts would be able to accomplish the goal of eliminating Syria's chemical arsenal within a year.
He also said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was "very actively" cooperating with international chemical weapons inspectors.
Putin also spoke of concluding a peace treaty with Japan to formally end World War II hostilities.
Putin said the image of a friend, instead of the image of an enemy, must first be created. and that Russia's beneficial trade relations with Japan are a "good foundation."
