Russian Court Upholds Belarusian Citizen's Arrest

MOSCOW -- The Moscow City Court has upheld the arrest of a Belarusian citizen charged with attacking a policeman during a rally in December, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Ihar Berazyuk, a member of the Other Russia opposition coalition, was arrested in the Russian capital on January 31.

Berazyuk was charged with inciting hatred and violence toward police during a rally on Moscow's Manezhnaya Square the previous month.

Berazyuk's lawyer had challenged the arrest, saying his client was not one of the organizers of that protest, simply one of the participants.

Berazyuk was arrested ahead of the latest Strategy 31 rally in support of freedom of assembly, one of a series of protests held by Russian opposition groups and rights activists on the last day of each month that has 31 days.

The campaign, supported by Other Russia, refers to Article 31 of the Russian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of assembly.
