BELGRADE -- Nationalists in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, have protested the release of two Croatian generals tied to the violent expulsion of 200,000 Serbs from Croatia in 1995.
Several hundred Serbs gathered outside the presidential building on November 17, burning a Croatian flag and demanding the government abandon plans to join the European Union.
The protest comes one day after the United Nations war crimes tribunal in The Hague overturned the convictions of Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac, who had been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for murdering and expelling Serbs from their self-declared entity of Krajina within Croatia.
Gotovina and Markac were met by tens of thousands of supporters in the Croatian capital, Zagreb, on November 16 after returning just hours after their acquittal.
