A well-known Russian opposition activist has been stabbed and hospitalized in the country’s second largest city, St. Petersburg.
RFE/RL's Russian Service reported from St. Petersburg that Aleksandr Skobov, a Soviet-era dissident, was attacked late on July 27.
Skobov reportedly sustained at least four stab wounds and undergone surgery on July 28.

Skobov became well known for his dissident activities in the 1970s, when he was an active member of the dissident group "Left Opposition."
Skobov also edited the underground dissident publication "Perspectives" and took part in the activities of the pro-reforms Democratic Union movement.
Until 2010, Skobov was a member of opposition Yabloko party. Between 2009 and 2011, he was a member of the Solidarity movement's coordination council.
