Two Azerbaijanis Jailed As Iranian Spies

A Baku court has jailed two Azerbaijani men for spying for Iran.

Faiq Qurbanov and Seymur Rzazade were found guilty of high treason on February 5 and sentenced to 14 and 13 years in jail, respectively, the same day.

Investigators say the two men collaborated with representatives of Iran's intelligence services in 2013.

Azerbaijan has sentenced several of its citizens for spying for Iran since 2012.

In August, Azerbaijani citizens Hafiz Valiyev and Agamir Agamirov were sentenced to life in prison for spying for Iran.

Tensions between Tehran and Baku escalated in 2012, after Azerbaijani authorities arrested a number of men with alleged links to Iran who were reportedly plotting attacks in Azerbaijan.

Based on reporting by trend.az and apa.az

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
