Ukraine Protests To Russia Over Attacks On Embassy, Consulate

Updated

Ukraine has demanded compensation from Russia after mobs vandalized its embassy in Moscow and its consulate in Rostov-on-Don.

"We demand from the Russian authorities an immediate comprehensive investigation, strict punishment of those responsible, and compensation for material damage," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a June 13 statement.

The attacks underscore tensions between the two countries as fighting between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatists continues to rage in eastern Ukraine.

Around 100 people are reported to have thrown eggs at Ukraine's Moscow embassy on June 12.

A similar overnight attack on the consulate in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don left the building's windows smashed and office equipment damaged.

Ukraine's complaint comes one day after Russia's Foreign Ministry published a note of protest demanding an investigation into damage to its consulate in Kharkiv, in Ukraine.

Vandals reportedly pelted the building with eggs and paint.

Based on reporting by Reuters, Interfax, and TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
