Tajikistan: Opposition Warns It May Not Sign Peace Accord

Moscow, 23 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - The United Tajik Opposition has again warned that it may not sign a peace accord with the Tajik government, planned for later this month, unless certain demands are met.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the United Tajik Opposition (UTO) said it will send a representative to Friday's signing ceremony in Moscow. But the representative will not sign the National Reconciliation Accord unless other earlier demands are met.

Last week the UTO sent a letter to Annan saying it would boycott the signing ceremony unless there was an exchange of war prisoners, and a clarification of the posts to be offered to the opposition in a future government.

The UTO says the two conditions have also been communicated by its leader, Said Abdullah Nuri, in a letter to Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov.
