At Least 21 Killed In Coordinated Iraq Attack

Al-Fallujah, Iraq; 14 February 2004 (RFE/RL) -- Scores of heavily armed insurgents attacked a police station and a building belonging to the Iraqi Civil Defense Corps in the city of Al-Fallujah today, killing at least 21people and injuring some 30 others.

In the first attack, the insurgents fought their way into the police station, going from room to room, throwing hand grenades. Reports said they freed scores of prisoners as local police, heavily outgunned, tried unsuccessfully to mount a counterattack.

The insurgents also attacked the Iraqi Civil Defense Corps compound -- the same building where visiting U.S. General John Abizaid came under fire during a visit two days ago.

Al-Fallujah, 50 kilometers west of the capital Baghdad, lies in the so-called Sunni Triangle, and has gained a reputation as the nerve center of the armed insurgency against U.S.-led forces and their allies.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
