The U.S. spokesman, Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, told a press briefing in Baghdad today that U.S. troops battled members of the Al-Mahdi militia in Al-Sadr city, a Shi'ite neighborhood in the capital.
"Total roll-up over the last 24 hours from the numerous engagements in Sadr City resulted in 35 enemy killed, two enemy wounded, and four coalition soldiers wounded who have been returned to duty."
U.S. forces also destroyed a local al-Sadr office in the area. The U.S. general in charge of military operations in Iraq, General John Abizaid, warned on a visit to Bahrain today that "there is a limit" to U.S. patience with al-Sadr.
In Al-Kufah, 12 people, including four members of the Al-Mahdi militia, were reported killed overnight and today. Earlier today, a South African, a New Zealander, and an Iraqi were reported killed in a drive-by shooting in the northern city of Kirkuk.
