U.S. Hostage Escapes In Iraq

2 May 2004 -- U.S. contract worker Thomas Hamill was recovered by U.S. forces south of the Iraqi city of Tikrit today, three weeks after he was captured by suspected insurgents.

U.S. Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt today said that Hamill is "in good health" after apparently escaping his captors.

"He came out of a building [and] identified himself to American soldiers. It looked like it was an escape," Kimmit said. "This is [from] preliminary reports that we have [which] would indicate that he escaped from a building when he saw the American forces, identified himself, and was subsequently recovered."

Hamill was among seven contract workers missing since a 9 April attack on their truck convoy west of Baghdad. The bodies of four have since been found.

Also kidnapped in the attack was a U.S. soldier, whose fate remains unknown. He was last seen alive in video aired on the Arab television station Al-Jazeera, days after his abduction.
